What PlainSpecs is

PlainSpecs explains technical products in plain English, using the manufacturer’s own numbers. Each page answers a precise question you might search before you buy: which drives a NAS accepts, how much memory it takes, what actually changes between two models.

Behind every page there is a product record: one file per model, where every number points to the manufacturer’s datasheet or manual. Pages and comparisons are built from those records. Before a page can use a record, an AI agent that didn’t write the record checks every number in it against the manufacturer’s document. An editor reads every page before it is published.

Who it is for

PlainSpecs is written for buyers in the United States and the United Kingdom who are about to spend serious money on a technical product and want to understand its specifications first. We use American spelling, and the same pages serve readers in both countries.

What we cover

We start with NAS devices and home servers. Then we plan to add, in this order:

  • local video surveillance: PoE cameras and network video recorders;
  • prosumer networking: Wi-Fi 7 and multi-gigabit Ethernet;
  • home backup power: portable power stations and home batteries;
  • robot lawn mowers with RTK navigation.

We add a topic only when we can cover it with verified product records.

How we work

  • How we verify: where the numbers come from, how we label compatibility, how we use AI and how we correct errors.
  • Affiliate disclosure: how the site earns money and how we choose links.
  • Privacy policy: what data the site handles, and why.

Who is behind PlainSpecs
